Low Libido: Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

at Omniya Clinic in London

What are the causes of low libido?

There are many reasons for a low libido. In women one of the main causes is the menopause while in men the culprit can be low testosterone levels. Stress also plays a part in reducing the libido, as does ageing. But hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), as well as various over-the-counter medications can give both sexes a higher libido (sex drive) in their later years.

What treatments are available at Omniya?

HRT for women replaces the hormone oestrogen. This is depleted during the menopause with the result that it reduces blood flow to the vagina, making the tissue thinner and less sensitive. This can also affect lubrication, making intercourse painful. By replacing the lost oestrogen via an oral HRT pill or patch, these difficulties are minimised. At the same time HRT can also help with other symptoms of the menopause such as moods and hot flashes.

TRT can improve libido in men, as well as improve mood. That’s because testosterone is the hormone which is responsible for the male sex drive. Some women have a lack of testosterone and can benefit from it too in terms of their libido.

There are a handful of medications for a low libido, and these are best discussed with an expert.
