Pores are essential for skin health, allowing sweat and oil reach the skin’s surface. While most pores are small and unnoticeable, some of us suffer with enlarged pores, especially around the nose and cheek areas which create depressions and blockages on the surface of the skin.
Often containing one or more openings in the ducts, enlarged pores carry sweat and oil from the eccrine and sebaceous glands.
Pores can be found on every inch of the skin apart from the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet; appearing most visible on the face with a growing prominence as we age.
To help prevent enlarged pores, we recommend for our clients to have an everyday skincare routine that’s specifically tailored to their skin type. Although enlarged pores are not a cause for concern, we know that their appearance can have an impact on your self-esteem.
Enlarged pores are usually caused by over-active sebaceous (oil) glands, causing them to become blocked and visible. Other causes include ageing, excessive exposure to the sun, a hormone imbalance, and menstruation.
Also, with our family history to consider, our genetics play a large role in our skin type and condition; making some of us more likely to develop enlarged pores than others.
Similarly, inflammatory acne can cause enlarged pores as the sebaceous glands and hair follicle openings become weakened and prone to blockages.
The symptoms of enlarged pores are visible on the skin’s surface with blocked pores causing issues such as whiteheads, blackheads and cysts. The larger your pores, the more obvious the acne, blackheads or whiteheads appear; prompting many people to seek specialist treatments.
It’s also apparent that these symptoms are more commonly found in men due to their over-active sebaceous glands.
Whiteheads and blackheads
Whiteheads are a clog in the opening of a pore, creating a raised white or flesh coloured bump to appear on the surface of the skin.
Blackheads, like whiteheads, are a blockage which widens at the opening of a pore. However, rather than appearing white, a chemical reaction occurs when melanin is oxidised which turns the clogged pores black.
Nodules and cysts
Often considered the most painful of blocked pores, nodules and cysts form deep within the skin, causing swelling and irritation. When cystic acne appears, scarring on the skin is more likely.
Here at Omniya, we offer tailored treatment plans to help reduce the size and appearance of enlarged pores – this includes using microneedling techniques and skin peels.
Chemical peels act as an instant exfoliant as the procedure actively dissolves dead skin cells and encourages fast cell and collagen renewal. While the treatment prompts the appearance of younger, tighter looking skin, it also helps to improve acne scarring and discolouration.
Males tend to present more with large pores due to the fact they tend to have more overactive sebaceous (oil) glands.
Treatment time is typically 30-60 minutes.
Yes, it’s possible to go back to work that day – although you might want to have the rest of the day off, as the skin may be tight and red.
Your skin will appear a little raw, red and even a bit flaky immediately afterwards but this will soon settle down and you’ll start to see results shortly afterwards.
